Look at that packaging, you would almost think this crate contained a special wine but inside were cradled four canned of tomatoes.
Only a small number of these Halley Thirty-One Fifty-Five Tomatoes were grown. This varietal is very prized for its flavor. Then they were hand harvested & canned. Well, we want to share our bounty with you. Leave a comment on this post telling us what you've make with these tomatoes & your email. On Monday the 21st we'll randomly pick a winner. That person will receive a can of the 2008 Reserve & a can of the Fire Roasted Tomatoes plus recipe cards with ideas on how to use them. We can only ship to winners in the US & Canada, sorry.

We don't have plans to do much of anything new this week. We have friends visiting from San Francisco & want to spend our time visiting with them so we are going for the tried & true.

What we will have for you during this week are lots of cheese recipes. We hosted Cooking Minnesota at our house this past Saturday & taught everyone how to make mozzarella & ricotta. I made a few appetizers & desserts with the ricotta so I'll be sharing those with you as well as a great fresh chive cheese.

My first thought was a lovely gazpacho.
Ooh, or a with fresh basil garlic tossed onto some angel hair pasta.
Yum! Those tomatoes sound perfect for a vodka tomato cream sauce.

ReplyDeleteI think those tomatoes sound too delicious to do too much to them. I think the Splendid Table's simple recipe for bacon, tomato and onion pasta would really let them shine!
Yum! I buy the fire-roasted Muir Glen tomatoes sometimes - we love them, too! I think they'd make for a great with some pasta, basil, mozzarella, and a little olive oil!

ReplyDeleteI have never tried Muir Glen (what lovely packaging). Hmmmm I think I need to give them a try. Boy there are so many things to make with tomatoes! I think I would use them for my spaghetti pie.
ReplyDeleteI like Muir Glen too! I love their salsa! Their tomatoes are delicious! I would definitely make a pasta though with that reserve sauce.

ReplyDeleteI'd definitely keep it simple and tomato-centric with Marcella Hazan's Tomato-Butter Sauce, served with your favorite pasta and just maybe an Italian sausage on the side.
ReplyDeleteoh, how i love tomatoes. i can't WAIT until fresh tomatoes are ready, but until then, canned ones will suffice. i'd use those suckers in a marinara sauce first and foremost. :)

ReplyDeleteI saw your photo of the prized Muir Glen reserve tomatoes and immediately thought of all the carboard cases of Muir Glen whole crushed tomatoes I used to regularly order when I worked for a natural foods wholesaler. I once was making eggplant parmesean for a large group and needed a 32 oz can of tomatoes to cook down with olive oil to make the sauce. The next to the last can in the case contained...peach halves. The last can luckily was crushed whole tomatoes. I told our Muir Glen buyer at work about the mistake, she told Muir Glen about the factory mislabeling issue, and Muir Glen sent me a free case of tomatoes to apologize for the glitch. This was over 15 years ago, but I still smile remembering the almost eggplant and peaches parmesean! If I get a reserve can, I will make another eggplant parmesean.

ReplyDeleteMuir Glen are my absolute favorite tomatoes! I love to saute bacon, onion and zucchini then mix a can in, yummmy!
ReplyDeleteI would use a bulk of it to make homemade marinara (simple but so delicious) and also some baked eggs in tomato and garlic, with maybe some kale on the side.
