I'd never made cake pops before but, thought they might get a kick out of decorating and, of course, eating them. I went the real simple route when it came to making them. I bought some iced cupcakes from the local grocery store bakery then just smushed them up icing and all. I let that sit mixture sit in the fridge overnight then, formed it into egg shapes and put those on lollypop sticks.
Those got dipped into some white candy melts. I had a hard time with the dipping. It kept pulling the cakes off their sticks and I didn't get a nice smooth coat. Then it really dripped. Maybe chocolate is easier.
I bought edible markers for the boys to decorate the eggs. They were not a great success as they didn't draw all that well on the candy. There certainly wouldn't have been any detailed drawing. It didn't matter though as they were fully enjoyed for dessert and I have a request to make them for Thing 1's birthday next weekend. The adults thought they were ok too, though really sweet, tasting a lot like Hostess cupcakes or ding dongs.
On to Menu Planning Monday
Not a very exciting week as far as the menu goes, we are just eating up a lot of odds and ends we have around...

Just made my first cakepops this weekend for my daughter's bday. After you form the balls(or shape)put them in the fridge for several hours or freezer for 15 minutes. Dip the tip of the stick into the melted candy melts first and then insert the stick into the ball. Proceed to dip the entire thing in the candy melt. Tap and twirl to remove as much extra as possible. The candy melts start to dry so fast that you shouldn't get any drips after that. These are tips from the cookbook by Bakerella. Hope that helps!
Danyel - Thanks for the tips. The dipping the stick in the candy first is brilliant!
Lowen would love the cake pops!!
MAN you are so smart. For an 'experiment' to just go the pre-made route! Excellent. They just came into my range of 'doable'.
And for the Uberhealthy California Mommies, we could do a carrot cake and cream cheese frosting. (and yes, even buy those pre-made)
It just looks so FUN.
What did you stick them in? (to dry)
And did you get burned when they dripped? I am just wondering what age could to that phase with you?
Shopgirl - I was going to do carrot cake but ended up getting a box of 6 cupcakes instead. Matt took a box and put holes through the bottom & top & then taped it to a cooling rack so I could put the sticks through the holes to stand up. The candy coating was not very hot at all when melted. Read Danyel's tips in the comments as well for how to make the sticks stay in.
Those tips were super helpful!
It looks like the Things LOVED it. And that is what matters.
Those are cute! I also think your simple Easter dinner sounds delicious!
