Well, moving to San Francisco really opened my eyes to what Mexican food is plus Matt loves to make it at home. So, I discovered the joys of burritos, tamales, fajitas and soft tacos but I still hadn't given in to the fish taco. Until this week that is. We had some tortillas left over from making quesadillas & some nice cabbage from our CSA box so Matt sent me to the store for some firm white fish.
Ok I'm sold, this is delicious. The sauce was amazing, a little tart, a little sweet & a little spicy.
Baja Fish Tacos
1/4 c mayonnaise
1/4 c plain yogurt
1 1/2 T lime juice
1/4 t cumin
1/4 t dried dill
1/4 t dried oregano
1/8 t cayenne (or more to taste)
3/4 c firm white fish filets
1/2 c flour
6-oz beer
1/2 t salt
vegetable oil (We used peanut. You want something that can handle a high heat so olive oil won't work)
2 c cabbage, sliced
flour tortillas (we used large tortillas & needed 4, if you use taco size you'll probably need 6)
Whisk together the mayonnaise, yogurt, lime juice, cumin, dill, oregano & cayenne. Set aside.
Whisk the flour, beer & salt together. Cut the fish into your desired size.
In a pot with tall sides heat enough oil to cover your pieces of fish until very hot. Dip the fish in the batter & then carefully place into the pot. Do not crowd your pot, you'll have to do your fish in batches most likely. When the fish is crispy & golden brown use a slotted spoon to remove it from the oil & place it on a paper towel covered plate to drain. Repeat to cook all the fish.
Place some cabbage in the middle of each tortilla. Top with the sauce & fish. Roll up & eat.
Serves 2

I love fish tacos! We usually use grilled fish. So tasty!
Fish tacos are so delicious but I can never seem to cook the fish to the same crispiness that make it so good! I could grill but I prefer the crunchy texture. I'm all for trying again, if it will come out as perfect-looking as yours!
I've never had a fish taco either for the same reason - don't think I'll like it. But I might have to try it after reading your post!

Looks great. I'm going to try them. We had halibut tacos in Seattle at - Agua Verde (http://www.aguaverde.com/) by the Univ. of Washington. Its on the Lake Washington canal. They're delicious. Recommend highly....

Ooh these take me back... I used to eat fish tacos as a little kid when I lived in California with my parents. I'll definitely have to try making some of my own, thanks!

KAt, one of my fondest food memories in SF (no one calls it San Fran) were the array of fish & seafood tacos and burritos. I could eat this for breakfast.

Made these tonight for the family. Everyone gobbled them up! Like you, I was never very interested in eating a fish taco. After tonight, they are on my list of must haves. The sauce really made them special. Thanks for a great recipe.
